GODOX | 600R or 2400B | Save up to 30%!
The new Godox 600R is seriously impressive.
I have owned a few Godox 600-series lights in the past and past models were nothing to write home about. It wasn’t until the KNOWLED 1200B that Godox caught my attention and now they’ve brought the same build quality, output and color accuracy to their brand new 600R. The Godox 600R is a full color, 600-series COB light with CRMX, a locking Bowens mount, IP 54 rated head unit and ballast and something we’ve all been asking about for ages, GM tint (green and magenta tuning). I’ve teased this deal a bit in the CKL Facebook group already and I’ve gotten a lot of feedback and questions. I took some time to run some tests today to hopefully help answer a few of those questions. Now, please keep in mind, I’m not Andrew Lock or an official LED color scientist. I’m merely a man of the people DP and Gaffer based in Kansas City who happens to own a C-800 color meter! This test may not be as comprehensive as you’re used to if like me, you love sitting down with a bowl of cereal and a brand new episode of Gaffer and Gear on YouTube (please go follow Andrew if you aren’t already). That said, I am a very busy working DP and a working Gaffer and I do know what works for me and what doesn’t work for me on set.
When I purchase a new LED fixture I am primarily looking for these 5 things.
Color accuracy in CCT mode. 90% of the time we are using these fixtures to match or contrast ambient light on people. Human beings are in front of the camera. I want to know that I can place the fixture, dial it up and won’t need to correct some gnarly tint discrepancy between my light and the ambient or practical light. Also, while full color is nice and we’ll use the hell out of it, again I am using the light in CCT mode between 3000-6000k 90% of the time.
Output. You can’t shoot what you can’t see. The light needs to be bright enough to work for us in a variety of scenarios. At around the 600-level, I want the light to be bright enough to play inside with windows open or even shoot through a window in a lower light scenario like early morning, dusk or a night scene.
Build quality. I treat my equipment kindly but I don’t like to baby it. At this price point, I need to be comfortable on set, hands off without worrying about the unit being mishandled to the point it breaks on us.
Modifier options. Modifier options means that if I want to use a reflector, projection mount, softbox, lantern or fresnel, it’s easy to find, affordable to purchase and helps us get the most functionality out of a single unit.
Ease of use. Ease of use means, it’s easy to travel with, easy to store, easy to set up and easy to tear down and pack away. You’d be surprised at how many high end and high dollar fixtures fail at being easy to use.
The Godox 600R shines at all 5 levels. It’s output and color accuracy are both incredible. I just ran some tests at 5600K using the stock 45º locking Bowens reflector at 10’ and here’s what I found.
Some LED COB lights really start falling apart in CCT mode once you start dimming down below 50% but the Godox 600R does quite well. A difference of 147k is not easily noticed by eye and is easily correctable on set. Same with the magenta shift. That is what built-in GM+/- makes easy!
100% Output | CCT 5547 - CC# 0.0 - LUX - 12,700 - CRI 97.5
50% Output | CCT 5487 - CC# 0.2M - LUX 6,370 - CRI 97.5
20% Output | CCT 5426 - CC# 0.3M - LUX 2,650 - CRI 97.5
10% Output | CCT 5400 - CC# 0.2M - LUX 696 - CRI 97.5
The 600R is built like a tank with flexible head cables that lock and unlock easily with a satisfying click. It’s Bowens mount, so you can use all your inexpensive Bowens modifiers and it’s easy to move, set up, tear down and pack away.
Here’s a look at the basic menu including the brand new feature (GM+/-) which I absolutely LOVE and want on all of our fixtures.
I couldn’t be happier with this light. At $2490, it’s already competitively priced but we are offering a small number of units at a Cine Kit List discount for 25% off. We have about a dozen units IN STOCK and READY TO SHIP for 25% off. We may or may not extend the deal beyond those initial in stock units.
Pricing on the 600R with the CKL discount is $2490 - $623 = $1,867 and includes the 600R, a rolling travel case and the 45º locking Bowens reflector used in these tests.
Last week I was gaffing for HGTV here in Kansas City and we needed a lot of additional light into a 2nd story bedroom with limited notice. I had a 2400B on the ground going into a Lightbridge CRLS reflector but didn’t have the time or manpower to reset it onto a Mombo to get it into the 2nd story bedroom at the right angle. So we hustled out the 600R, put it on the balcony ledge and kicked it into the room for a gorgeous solution.
Here’s an image of that setup. You can see that although it’s still daylight out, the 600R had plenty of output to make a visible difference in our shot.
Can’t share the final yet but DP and Director were very happy, we shot it quickly and moved on to the next setup.
Also, although I am saving my write up on the 2400B for a future post, we do have a handful of 2400Bs IN STOCK and READY TO SHIP. We are offering 30% off the 2400B kit found at the link below for a limited time! Here’s the 2400B at work last November in Kansas City, shining a custom logo onto our Team Deakins event. Note, we were just testing the Gobo here, we ended up shining it into a water pool out front, but I don’t have a great image of that, so here it is during test phase instead. This is the Godox 2400B with a 19º projector mount and a custom gobo made for us by Godox, one of the sponsors of the event!
