I just finished out my 15th year working in video production and I’m still using the Matthews c-stands and beefy babies I purchased USED from a local studio that was closing up shop when I was getting started. I don’t know how old they were when I bought them, but they’d seen MANY years. None of them were clean, none of them were pretty. But they worked and they still work now. When I’m buying gear, I want to buy it once. Nothing dings ROI like having to repurchase equipment that failed because it wasn’t built tough enough to last. I’m going 15 years strong with Matthews and have NEVER seen an equipment failure that wasn’t directly caused by improper setup.
I didn’t start out purchasing Matthews for any reason in particular. Like I said, that studio was closing, I needed stands and I didn’t have a lot of money so used was a great option. But I’ve stuck with Matthews over the years because of their pricing, durability, ease of use on set and strength to weight ratio.
Some people get religious about grip gear. I’m not one of those. But I am religious adjacent. I just like using gear that works. Stands that aren’t heavier than they need to be, or too light to serve as an anchor for rags and big LED lighting. I like equipment that can take a beating but that doesn’t weigh as much as a Ford Pinto. I like grip gear that doesn’t have to be handled with a delicate touch. That can lock and unlock easily and that can be used as a weapon in the rare chance you get into a street fight and all you have is a 6” Matthellini.
When I built out my 2T Transit grip van in 2023, it was a no brainer that I was going all Matthews. All our c-stands, combo stands, low boys, apple boxes, beefy babies, shot bags, baby booms, 8x8 frames, 12x12 frames, 4x4 frames and most of our rags are Matthews. Have only had the Matthews Panel Stand for one week and we are already adding a 2nd one to our permanent van package. Essentially, the Matthews Panel Stand is a robust medium-roller combo that comes with a crank so one person can adjust the height on the fly, even when fully loaded. This comes in super handy when you’ve got a Godox F400R working on a boom right next to talent and it needs to crank up a few inches and already has the weight on it. My grip / swing Cory on a blustery day in Kansas City. Cory and Matthews are both impervious to inclement weather. They both dry off and work just fine the next day! Here we’ve got some Godox lights blasting into some Godox cine reflectors. Nice lil’ combo.
