CREAMSOURCE & AIRGLOW | 30% OFF!

I thought I was over panel lights.

For awhile now, my 2x1 and 1x1 LED panels haven’t been getting the work they used to. I’ve been experimenting with some different styles of lighting and my COB fixtures were getting a lot more action.

Until I got my hands on the new Vortex8 SOFT and Airglow 2x1 Complete Kit. They’ve injected new life into my interview setups and I’m loving the look I am getting out of this combo. I think you will too!

Thanks to our partners at Creamsource and Adorama for helping us put together this holiday special. I’m excited to share this deal with you!

At NAB and Cinegear I was wandering the show floor and saw an interesting setup. An inflatable 2x1 lightshaping device sitting directly on the floor, pointed upwards. It was big and it looked incredibly well built and I loved the quality of the light that was coming from it. We’ll get back to what that means, or what I think that means a bit later. I walked over to the booth, saw that it was a DoP Choice product and decided to put it on my list of things to follow up about. Months later at Cinegear it caught my eye again and I investigated a bit further. Now that I’ve had one of my own for the last 6 weeks, it’s time to share how fun and useful this Airglow setup is.

To start off, the Airglow is essentially a single item, ruggedly inflatable, incredible fast to assemble, booklight device. It works with many different 1x1, 2x1 and 2x2 devices but I’m going to describe my use of it in conjunction with the Creamsource Vortex8 and Vortex8 SOFT because those are the panels I own and operate on set. So to start off, the Airglow comes in a stylish, duffle bag with several key ingredients. A rolling black and silver mat, that you can use to assemble and disassemble the Airglow on less than pristine surfaces, a foot pump to blow it up, the Airglow itself, which has an opening for the light fixture at the bottom, a reflective surface near the rear and an opening at the front which you can leave open or add diffusion to. If you purchase the Airglow Complete Kit, which I highly recommend, you get a variety of both reflection and diffusion options as well as a 40º LCD. The reflection options are the standard ultra, a hard silver, bleached muslin and unbleached muslin. The diffusion options are 1/4 grid, half grid, magic cloth, bleached muslin, unbleached muslin or simply leaving the opening, well….open!

Walls of text are boring so let me break this up a bit with some recent examples of use on set and then get back to describing how Airglow works and how much I love it in conjunction with our Creamsource Vortex units. Here we are using it as a key on Michelle Buck, ESPN personality for a Chiefs v Bucs MNF feature story. The hero light is the new Vortex8 SOFT and the lightshaping device is the Airglow 2x1 Complete Kit. The hero light is the new Creamsource Vortex8 SOFT and the lightshaping device is the Airglow 2x1 Complete Kit.

Here we are able to bring in the Vortex8 SOFT and Airglow 2x1 kit very close to our talent, add a beauty bounce and some positive fill and that’s most of our look. We are supplementing with a CRLS 100 outside to place some warm tones on the wall and fireplace, a Godox F400B as a soft edge and a Nanlite 60C shooting right into that wood in the fireplace to accentuate the glow. I love the eye light we’re getting from the Airglow here and how pleasing the light quality is.

One of the reasons we chose the Vortex8 and Airglow setup here is because for this job we needed to flip the key halfway through the interview setup and had a limited amount of time with the NFL player and their family member. Using the Airglow allowed us to film the first half, flip the key quickly and stay on schedule, while providing us with a lovely tone and eye light for our talent, Michelle.

The genius of the Airglow design is how fast it is to set up, how nimble it is to dance around your scene, especially compared to a normal booklight setup, and while it’s a nice large source that gives you a beautifully indirect and natural quality of light, it’s able to squeeze into some tiny spaces where a normal booklight couldn’t fit. It’s DoP Choice, so you know it’s incredibly well built but it’s also incredibly easy and fast to assemble. You can have it from the bag to a stand in less than 5 minutes. Here’s a video from DoP Choice for my visual learners.

And here are some friends discussing their experience with Airglow. Props to my buds John Roche from Gaffers Salon and Luke Seerveld from Meet the Gaffer. If you’re reading this and you don’t know who they are, go find them on the internet! They’re great people!

I want to say one last thing about the Airglow before I move on to the new Vortex8 SOFT panels. There’s a reason that some DPs and Gaffers always choose a booklight. I know it’s easy to get caught up in what light is brightest and what a C800 spectrometer says about color accuracy and output. Data is straightforward! There’s no arguing with a light meter. Tone however, and what I call “quality of light” can be subjective. There are people who will tell you all day that just pointing the source directly at a person yields the same visual result as a booklight, which uses a reflected source through some kind of diffusion.

I disagree! I always want a booklight if I can find room to set one up! Sometimes, we can’t find the room and I go another way but the Creamsource Vortex8 and Airglow 2x1 Complete Kit has brought new life into my interview setups lately. I LOVE the quality of light I am getting from this combination on faces, the eyelight and the ability to reposition the key fast! I wish I could share everything we’ve been shooting with this setup but a lot of it simply isn’t out yet! However, one of my favorite setups is the Creamsource Vortex8 SOFT with the Airglow 2x1 Complete on a low boy, with wheels. Super easy to wind up the power cable and roll around on set. Mobile booklight!

On to the Creamsource deal!

One reason that I started off talking about Airglow is simply that it’s a brand new product. Most people I’m working with on set are seeing it in person for the first time when I bring it out. But everyone knows who Creamsource is. They’ve built a reputation as the premium lighting panel manufacturer with the most demanding, exacting and tough as hell units on the market.

IP 65 rated. 650w output. RRGBBW full color. CCT range from 2200 to 15k. Bluetooth. DMX. LumenRadio. If you are buying a panel light, my first recommend is always a Vortex.

So what is the Vortex8 SOFT? How is it different than the original Vortex and why would you choose one over the other?

Vortex8 next to the Vortex8 SOFT.

Many similarities. A few key differences! Read on below!

Both Vortex8 and Vortex8 Soft are IP65. 650w. RRGBBW units with exacting and precise build quality and rugged outer shell. They are both the exact same size but they are NOT the same weight. They don’t have the same beam angle. The Vortex8 SOFT does not have the LED spot lenses that the original Votex8 does. And crucially, they’re not the same price.

If I had to summarize it in one sentence, the Vortex8 is designed to run at it’s peak open faced, while the Vortex8 SOFT is designed to be used with the diffuser attachment. Here’s some of the differences summarized.

First off, weight. Vortex8 SOFT is about 5lbs lighter than Vortex8.

Vortex8 beam angle is native 20º while Vortex8 SOFT open faced beam angle is 110º.

They key comes when using the diffuser. Vortex8 SOFT is actually brighter with it’s diffuser than the original Vortex8. Vortex8 at 3M with the diffuser panel gets you 1150lx at 3200k, while Vortex8 SOFT with it’s diffuser panel at 3M gives you 1880lx! That’s a 60% increase in brightness from the Vortex8 to the Vortex8 SOFT if you’re using a diffuser panel. Wild! A 60% increase in brightness alongside an equally rugged shell at a lower price? Sign me up! Especially in conjunction with this discount opportunity. Also, while with the Vortex8, you can still see the spot lenses with the flat diffuser panel on, you cannot see any of the LED diodes when using the flat diffuser with the Vortex8 SOFT.

I do want to note that if you are using the Vortex8 in combination with an Airglow, you are going to get more output purchasing one of the original Vortex8 units as you’d use the light open faced in that setup for max output. I haven’t metered it yet but I plan to later this week before the holiday to report back as we own both units. I love the Vortex8 SOFT as an addition to the Creamsource lineup because it’s an affordable way to get into or diversify your Creamsource lineup and if you’re using it as a direct source with the flat or dome diffuser, you’re going to get a lot more brightness than you will with the original Vortex8. Also, did I mention it’s more affordable?! Work has been hit or miss in a lot of places these last two years and saving money on something that’s already competitively priced is only a good thing! Before I get to the prices, here’s the Vortex8 SOFT the day after we got it, working the Kelce brothers New Heights podcast. I’m playing DP and Gaffer here and the Vortex8 SOFT is in a back room in full daylight providing this blue glow behind Trav.

In conclusion! The DoP Choice Airglow is an awesome new, rugged as hell, quick to assemble, mobile booklight that’s perfect in combination with one of Creamsource’s outstanding fixtures, including their new Vortex8 SOFT, which is 5lbs lighter, 500lx brighter (with flat diffusers on each at 3M), more affordable and also rugged as hell, IP65, 650w, RRGBBW with LumenRadio and all of the incredible support the CreamTeam (that’s what they call themselves) provides!

If you want my suggestion, if you’re new to both buy a Creamsource Vortex8 and the Airglow 2x1 Complete. If you just want a light with the most open face output, buy the original Vortex8. If you want a light with 60% increase in brightness when using the diffuser panel at a lower cost of entry, get the new Vortex8 SOFT and if you want a smaller version, get the Vortex4 in either flavor. Luke Seerveld, we added the 2x2 Airglow “Bounce House” just for you but anyone else who wants one can get it too.

Now on to pricing! Most items are IN STOCK and READY TO SHIP. So order right away to get your unit here next week!
